MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will sign the new University of the Philippines Charter in Cebu City at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The historic event will take place in the Conference Hall, Library Building of UP Visayas Cebu College, according to a news release.
The signing will be witnessed by UP President Emerlinda R. Roman, members of the UP Board of Regents, and Sen. Francisco Pangilinan, one of the bill’s principal sponsors in the Senate.
The new charter names UP the “National University,” recognizes it as a University System and acknowledges the authority of the chancellors and the university council as the highest academic body within each constituent university, the UP release says.
The new charter also allows an additional P100 million over and above its regular appropriation each year for the next five years, and grants the University flexibility to enable it to provide a more fair compensation package and to develop its assets.
The UP community regards the charter’s approval auspicious as the University celebrates its centennial year, the release says.
